W1 / C105W1 — plain high-carbon water-hardening tool steel. HRC 60-65. Simplest tool steel — cheapest and most easily hardened. For chisels, punches, hammers, taps, drills and simple tooling.
C105W1 (EN 1.1545 / AISI W1) per EN ISO 4957. Plain 1.0% C tool steel with no significant alloying. Water or brine quench. HRC 60-65. Very low hardenability — case-hardens 2-3 mm deep while core remains tough (excellent for impact tools). Very low alloy cost. Standard for chisels, cold chisels, punches, rock drills, woodworking tools and any simple tool where low cost and easy sharpening matter more than wear resistance.
